Tyre cord fabrics, used as reinforcement material in tyre production, plays a key role in tyre performance. Kordsa Global has created a number of joint projects with major tyre companies to develop advanced tyre reinforcement materials, resulting in more efficient tyres. Recent innovations have included the successful development of twisted monofilaments and hybrid cords to meet the rapidly evolving needs of the market, such as cooler running tyres, lower rolling resistance and reduced tyre weight. Twisted monofilament cords are nylon monofilament fibres made up of 3 to 7 plies that have round cross sections within a diameter range of 0.23 to 0.50 mm. The monofilaments are twisted around each other by 50 to 200 twists per meter in Z or S direction. Twisted nylon monofilament cords show higher energy absorption upon impact in service than competitive nylon multifilament cords, have less heat generation and better fatigue resistance, providing increased retention and improved dynamic properties for both rubber and fabric. The different combination of existing synthetic fibres offers new ways to explore and engineer new cord properties, by combining fibre tensile and thermal properties. Hybrid cords can be created by combining different kinds of existing synthetic fibres in order to offer engineered solutions for various tyre applications. Various hybrid structures are possible, such as hybrids of aramid with nylon 6.6 and PET, hybrids of PET and PEN and nylon 6.6, hybrids of rayon with nylon 6.6 or PET. The most commonly used hybrid cords are aramid and nylon 6.6 which gives the combination of high tenacity and high modulus synthetic fibre with high elongation and low modulus fibre.
