The agricultural equipment industry has seen an increasing demand for uptime with growing horsepower levels over many years to increase productivity. Particularly for harvesting equipment the value of uptime is high due to high investment cost, a short harvesting period during the year and considerable cost of transport logistics for harvested goods. The operator of harvesting machines in the past was able to diagnose machine performance and condition from the seat. Today modern cabs offer high comfort levels with excellent noise and vibration reduction, so the operator can no longer perform the task of monitoring the machine condition with the same reliability. Condition Monitoring is seen as the technology to provide uptime and optimize maintenance cost. A condition monitoring system specifically designed for agricultural working vehicles and introduced on a self propelled forage harvester is presented. A Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) solution reduces service and warranty costs by reducing unscheduled maintenance, setting maintenance schedules according to the rigorousness of machine usage, and provides a flexible on-vehicle data acquisition and analysis system. Vibration analysis is used to monitor the condition of ball bearings of main functional elements. The CBM Solution launches a new methodology in investigating and analyzing root cause analysis using real time data from machines in the field. This is a new tool-set that enables service, reliability, and product engineering personnel to quickly respond to potential field issues. The system is fully integrated into the vehicle electronics architecture and allows for remote access via the John Deere telematics system.
