For the simulation of vehicles, a variety of multibody system programs exists, commercial ones as well as academic ones. Considering tank vehicles, the moving liquid cargo can have a significant influence on the driving dynamics and stability that must be considered in the multibody system model. Also the influence of compartments in the tank has to be taken into account. Therefore, we propose a co-simulation approach that consists of a coupled multibody system simulation for the vehicle and a particle/liquid simulation for the cargo. In case of liquids, Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics is a very beneficial choice as free surfaces occuring during sloshing are tracked automatically. It was demonstrated how a co-simulation approach that couples SPH and classical Multibody Dynamics can be used to predict the stability of driving maneuvers of transport vehicles. This method can be used to investigate the impact of different tank designs on the stability of the transport vehicle system. Comparisons between different tank designs showed the positive effect of a subdivision of the tank into compartments in terms of braking stability. Moreover, the simulations show that the lateral motion of a sloshing cargo can be beneficial with respect to the rolling stability in lane change maneuvers.
