While discussions regarding the rise of the electric vehicle tend to focus on reducing CO2 emissions, multiple-motor concepts offer an additional asset with new and fascinating potential for redefining automotive handling response. A test vehicle provided Bosch Engineering GmbH with the ideal platform for demonstrating its own design concepts - with impressive results. Up to now focal considerations in discussions concerning electric vehicles tended to concentrate on ecological aspects. With the application of torque vectoring the discussion expands to embrace driving pleasure as an additional motive for switching to electric power. Torque vectoring can also support safety and convenience functions, such as a stay-in-lane tracking feature. The wide range of potential drive concepts must be viewed as a challenge when we consider the production numbers, which are still relatively low. The effort and expenditure required to network systems and functionalities without undesirable collateral effects should not be underestimated. Here the objective must be prompt definition of standards that will hold testing and validation of a variety of design versions to reasonable levels. Suppliers capable of assuming an important role in the integration process assume an essential role. This could consist of providing vehicle manufacturers with the desired latitude for defining a vehicle's handling while simultaneously offering generic components, suitable for modular application in a variety of environments, as a means of limiting development costs
