Tire/road noise reduction by road-surface improvement is one of the most effective approaches for traffic noise abatement. The purpose of this study is to develop a method to predict the effects of road-surface improvement on tire/road noise reduction in order to provide a tool to plan traffic noise abatement measures. To achieve this, tire/road noise should be predicted in octave bands. In this study, we investigated the relationship between tire/road noise in octave bands and the surface roughness for several sections of pavement. Tire/road noise in each octave band was found to be approximated by a linear formula of the height unevenness and the Mean Profile Depth of road roughness. Both the tire vibration noise and the air pumping noise were considered in the approximation. Some additional predictions of tire/road noise using the formula were performed on other sections of road surface. The results indicate that tire/road noise in each octave band is predicted accurately sufficiently for traffic noise assessment.
