The proving ground test track surfaces provided a surprisingly wide range in OBSI (on-board sound intensity) level, especially considering the lack of transverse textured pavements. This was in part the result of very low OBSI levels measured for an ultra smooth asphalt pavement. In general, the proving ground test track pavements constructed to replicate California highway pavements were within the range of those measured statewide. For the OGAC and longitudinal tined PCC, the levels tended to be on the higher side of the distribution of actual highways, while the DGAC and chip seal surface were more in the middle of the distribution. For the lower frequency tire noise levels, 800 Hz and below, a wide range in level between pavements reflected increasing level with increasing aggregate size and apparent surface texture. On the ultra smooth AC pavement, differences between the tires were quite pronounced with much of the difference attributable to tread design. For surfaces with more apparent roughness, these differences were reduced although the Aquatred tire consistently produced higher levels than the SRTT (Standard Reference Test Tire). Differences in tread design related noise on were more apparent the DGAC and PCC surfaces than on the other pavements. On AC surfaces with more texture, such as the OGAC, the tread design differences were not very apparent. For the Aquatred tire, air pumping at harmonics of the tread passage frequency in the range from 1300 to 2200 Hz appeared to contribute to the noise on some of the less open surfaces. This apparent air pumping was virtually eliminated for porous surfaces measured elsewhere in the state. However, air pumping alone did not completely account for all the observations made across all of the pavements and other mechanisms, such scrubbing, may be involved. For SRTT, air pumping did not appear to be as significant of a factor even for the less open pavements implying that scrubbing or other mechanisms were also important in the 1300 to 2200 Hz region.
