Marine field testing of a series of self-stratified siloxane-polyurethane coatings has been carried out. The siloxane-polyurethane coating system is promising since coatings having low surface energy combined with good bulk properties are produced. High throughput screening of coating compositions has been carried out to explore the effects of key variables on coatings performance, using laboratory tests designed to determine the interaction of representative marine organisms, such as algae, bacteria, and barnacles, with the coating surfaces. Field immersion testing has also been carried out on a series of the coatings and the results compared to the laboratory assays. Several coating compositions have been identified that have good fouling-release performance in addition to good adhesion and toughness.
