Since introducing the first mass-production hybrid vehicle in 1997, Toyota has continued developing the hybrid system as a response to the issues of CO2 emissions, energy resources and air pollution in densely-populated areas The new Toyota Hybrid System developed for the 3rd generation Prius and described in this paper, targets improved fuel consumption, particularly in real world conditions, and downsized components to enhance its adoption in multiple vehicles The new 1 8-liter 2ZR-FXE petrol engine achieves high thermal efficiency by using the high expansion ratio Atkinson cycle and cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) The adoption of an electric water pump contributes to improved fuel efficiency and, in combination with an Exhaust Heat Recirculation system, improves cold weather fuel economy Size and weight reduction efforts such as the speed reduction device to downsize the motor and increased system voltage have, in combination with efficient Power Control Unit direct cooling, resulted in improved system efficiency and packaging User-selectable driving modes contribute to enhance the driving experience and the new ECO mode helps the driver to achieve better real-world fuel consumption By optimizing every component of the hybrid system, the Prius powertrain achieves improved fuel economy while meeting the stringiest emission regulations in the world The system simultaneously delivers a high power performance resulting in a compelling driving experience. The paper here describes the newly developed hybrid system of the third generation Prius, resulting in lower fuel consumption as well as downsized powertrain components.
