This paper describes the evolution of a novel planetary shift transmission with improved efficiency. An idea was turned into a theory; the theory into a computer program; the program into potential concepts; and one of the concepts into a demonstration model. The investigated concept is unlike any existing type of planetary shift transmission. The main benefit is the minimisation of parasitic losses in the shifting actuation system, complemented by low mesh losses in the most-used ratios. With five planetary gearsets, the numbers of gears, bearings, and concentric connections are greater than in conventional concepts. However, this is offset by the simplicity of the shifting devices and actuation system. Pneumatic, vacuum, electric, or even manual actuation could be used instead of power hydraulics. The lubricant and lubrication system can be optimised for the gears and bearings, with much-reduced filtration and cooling. Overall, this simplification is good for reliability and maintenance, and it would be possible to provide the benefits of a hot-shift transmission with a limited range of manufacturing skills. Manual or semi-automatic control would make the transmission immune to electro-magnetic interference. A 5-forward/ 1-reverse version is suitable for many road, and off-road, vehicles. 3-forward/ 3-reverse versions could be considered for some work machines or railway applications, when combined with a torque converter or other gearing. Six-forward speed versions are impaired by having a double-shift, but have low meshing losses and planet speeds.
