Current development possibilities give a designer more and more options to create signals with individual illuminating surfaces and design structures. Furthermore the inside of the signal can be mostly seen under a clear outer lens as a shiny, mirror-like surface etc. For example there is a possibility to create a signal as a ring consisting of several dots. So there is a possibility to give each car an individual appearance at day or at night. Due to these reasons the design of modern signals appears much more aesthetical then in the past. But the question is how to measure or to evaluate the illuminating surface or the homogeneity of signals with modern measurement methods especially in the case of distinctive designed lamps. To evaluate the homogeneity of signals a survey will be conducted including a series of measurements of characteristical signals with difficult optics. A luminance scanner is being built to scan the signals. On the one hand this luminance scanner measures the luminance distribution over the surface, which is comparable with the so called patch luminance as proposed in the early eighties of the last century. On the other hand luminance pictures are taken and used for a comparison. In the next step the elaborated illuminating surfaces will be checked against the definition in the regulation ECE-R48. Also with the aid of the above mentioned luminance pictures a definition of homogeneity or rather a degree of homogeneity will be worked out. This shall be the base for an assessment procedure with test persons later on. A future aim of this survey is to develop an easy and rapid method to determine the illuminating surface and to characterise the homogeneity of signals.
