In the recent three years, more attention was paid to the design of road lighting. More light may lead to more safety at the first glance. However, it does not mean more energy efficient. In order to save energy in road lighting , the lighting power density (LPD) is as the same important as safety should be considered in designing good road lighting. But in practice, this parameter is always been neglected. A case study on the real lighting effect comparison of general high pressure sodium lamps and LVD induction lamps were carried out. This article will discuss some important concepts in road lighting including LPD. The average light level, uniformity, lamp power, S/P ratio as well as light power density are analyzed to illustrate that better lighting does not mean more energy. With the promotion of green lighting project, the LPD should be taken into account for road lighting design. In short, electrodeless fluorescent lamp is suitable for this kind of retrofit lighting to save energy. And its long lifetime and high efficiency can save a lot of energy and money. In the future with better luminaire design it can be more wide used in roadway lighting.
