Vehicle type approvals are regulated in EU Directives mandatory for the EU member states. Outside the EU the individual UNECE contracting parties regulate the vehicle type approval on a national. The so-called 'framework directive for the whole vehicle type approval (WVTA) is EC/2007/46/EC applicable to motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles. This directive refers to the UNECE lighting Regulations which are considered to be equivalent with the corresponding EC Directives. So, certification according to the EC directives, concerning automotive lighting components and its installation may not be necessary and could be covered by the certification according to the UNECE Regulations. This contribution will give an overview of the global regulatory scenery. The UNECE type approval system is quickly spreading globally. It is adapting quickly to technical progress. FMVSS108 for the US has been rewritten. The major details will be explained. The China Compulsory Certification has become an important issue for most automotive lighting suppliers. Some basic information will be presented. Taiwan is relatively a small market, but their legislation had an important impact on the type approval procedures for the set-makers and technical services. What is happening in India and other markets like South-America?
