Earlier this year, SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) made trial runs at Burgdorf which proved the practicality of the ETCS (European Train Control System) Level 1 Limited Supervision standards which will form part of the new Baseline 3 system requirements specification. Since the launch of the first pilot ETCS Level 2 cab signalling installation in 2001, SBB had been seeking Commissioning of the Gotthard is expected in 2017 and the Ceneri two years later. But Level 2 was considered too expensive and complex for widespread adoption, so the ministry agreed that the best way forward would be to introduce Level 1. This would allow to replace existing trackside components and reduce the complexity of the system, simplify access to the network for train operating companies, follow the principles laid down in the European Unions interoperability directives and prepare the network for the future implementation of cab signalling using ETCS Level 2 or Level 3 applications.
