In order to analyze the incident mechanism of traffic accidents, analysis was performed focusing on near-miss incident data in a vehicle-following situation. Based on data of forward collision near-miss incidents obtained using drive recorders, this paper investigated changes in driving behavior and driving states with respect to the traffic circumstance in a vehicle-following situation. A feature of this data is that the headway time is shorter and that the reaction time is longer than normal braking in a vehicle-following situation. The analysis shows that traffic circumstances strongly influence driver behavior. Moreover, it also shows that the behavior of vehicles in an adjacent lane affect driving behavior as this might reduce situational awareness of the preceding vehicle, resulting in a shorter headway time. The major conclusions that can be drawn from the near-miss incident database analysis and experimental study are as follows: 1. Forward collision near-miss incidents can be classified into eight types based on the relative position between the host vehicle and the object involved in the incident. 2. Factors of near-miss incidents in a vehicle-following situation were shown to be longer braking reaction times and shorter headway times. 3. The near-miss incident database showed that the traffic circumstance in an adjacent lane influences driving behavior as this might reduce situational awareness of the driver with respect to the preceding vehicle. In the future, it is planned to perform a micro analysis of driving behavior and driver state according to the traffic circumstance using a large number of subjects. It is also planned to propose countermeasures for active safety technology to decrease forward collision accidents based on the analytical results of near-miss incident data.
