Studies of cast parts with flaws reaching surfaces have shown that the majority of flaws are in a stable state. Hence, most casting flaws are not hazardous and these parts are acceptable for service. However, approximately 7-9 % of casting flaws are detected by the AE diagnostics as developing ones. Therefore, if there are casting flaws in side frames and bogie bolsters of freight cars, it is desirable to inspect these regions by the AE method, taking into account the testing algorithms developed. This will allow one to improve the reliability of evaluating the engineering state of this type of parts with flaws and reduce their repeated rejection. This is especially important in testing regions of cast components that were repaired by welding and fusing. The results obtained in lifetime tests performed with the AE method coincide with the results of statistical processing of data on failures of cast parts during their operation. Within a period of 30-35 years, the rejected parts for bogie bolsters and side frames amount to 20 and <10 %, respectively. The application of the developed AE testing technique under wagondepot conditions for diagnosing bogie bolsters and side frames of freightcar trucks during their exploitation and after repair works allows prolongation of their service life and improvement of the testing reliability.
