Three friction pairs (babbitt-cast iron, alluminium alloy-cast iron, tin-lead bronze-nitrided steel) were studied for scuff bearing capacity under load up to 2500 N and for wear products generated on the fricting surfaces under load 1000 N for 40 h in presence of a lubricating oil. A dramatic increases in the friction coefficient were observed under loads 2250 N, 1750 N and 1000 N, respectively. The bronze block and the steel roll showed the highest wear (material loss) during the tests. The exchange of metallic components between the fricting surfaces and their loss to the lubricating oil was evidenced in detail. The metallic materials under study are used for making crankshaft bearings in locomotive diesel engines in Russia.
