Overhead presentation. Early in the last century there was increased use of Mg in aeronautics. It decreased in the 50th because of low corrosion resistance of Elektron alloys (Fe, Cu, Ni contamination). Modern alloys show good corrosion resistance. The psychological problem (fear) is flammability. By alloy development and further testing this fear will be reduced in future. Metal matrix composites show excellent properties for special applications but are costly. Project of the EU are aiming at the development of new Mg-alloys for wrought applications with properties comparable to aluminium alloys and at the development of new magnesium forming technologies for the aeronautics industry.
