Sheet Moulding Compounds (SMC) are fibre reinforced thermosetting resins for the processing in hot moulding processes in industrial serial sizes. These versatile materials can be optimized regarding organic emissions and reach emission levels being nowadays more than ten times lower than in classical, non-optimized SMC formulations. At the same time the broad range of demands in applications like car body panels and even in car interior applications can be met. Such formulations based on unsaturated polyester resins are used for car spoilers and structural car interior parts like sunroof frames. With new generations of SMC based on renewable resins the current limit of emissions can be lowered once more by a factor of ten by comparison with low emission formulations based on polyester resins. The emissions of such materials are on a level of about 200 ppm (VOC). Automotive industry is seeking for further reductions also as a consequence of legislation in some countries. With new formulations using renewable resins based on epoxidized linseed oil all demands connected with automotive interior applications are fulfilled and emissions are further reduced to a level of 20 ppm (VOC). Considering environmental aspects such materials offer also the advantage that the resin itself is CO2 neutral with regard to its lifecycle.
