Recently, improvement in fuel efficiency and safety has become the biggest issues in worldwide automotive industry. In order to achieve weight reduction and enhanced safety of car body, the most practical and reasonable solution is to apply high strength and high formable automotive steels. Regarding this issue, various automotive steel technologies have been developed. POSCO has tried to develop AHSS and its application technologies to provide integrated steel solutions to auto companies. POSCO is currently developing new steel grades with higher TS x EI value. TWIP could be an example. Thai is categorized as Ultra-AHSS compared to conventional AHSS and has very high strength-ductility combination over 60000 of TS x EI value. POSCO's concept for customer supporting can be well represented by EVI, which means technical supports covering all stages of new car project from design to mass production. Integrated light weight solutions through new forming technologies such as TWB, hydroforming and HPF are continuously developed and provided for EVI activities. In addition, development of application solutions such as manufacturing technologies considering forming, welding and painting is also conducted to help car body design using POSCO steel products. Detailed status of these technologies will be discussed.
