An overview is provided of the material performance trends, principal strategic focus and prospective opportunities regarding automotive product development and commercialization efforts at United States Steel Corporation, 'U. S. Steel'. A brief general description of U. S. Steel's global manufacturing capabilities will be presented, emphasizing North American automotive sheet production facilities, finishing operations and technology support services. Highlighted examples of our strategic commitment to advanced automotive steel technology will focus on product and process development initiatives that are designed to meet evolving critical and demanding customer requirements for new vehicle applications. Noteworthy among these requirements are vehicle efficiency attributes that include high energy absorption for crashworthiness and occupant safety, light weighting for improved fuel economy, component and global stiffness, control of springback and dent resistance. Metallurgical approaches to achieve targeted component properties, production rates and design flexibility through increased part formability, strength development, welding performance and environmental durability will be presented, highlighting the use of fundamental and applied process - structure - property relationships in automotive sheet alloys. The overarching strategies that drive U. S. Steel's efforts in automotive product development are presented through current program efforts and include continuous pursuit of a leadership position in safety and environmental stewardship, a sharp focus on value-added product mix, appropriate global business platfonn expansion, building a strong capital structure, continuous enhancement of our reliability and cost competitiveness and retention of a skilled and diverse workforce.
