As the consensus builds for comprehensive reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across international boundaries and industries, there is a growing need to understand the role that materials play in achieving a low carbon society. Through use of its products and through research initiatives such as the Future Steel Vehicle programme, the steel industry is helping automakers tackle the problem of rising GHG emissions. These programs demonstrated the application of new steel grades, design techniques and manufacturing technologies that significantly reduced vehicle weight while improving safety and performance and maintaining affordability. Future Steel Vehicle focuses on radical change in the future and is further evidence of the steel industry's commitment to solutions that benefit the enviroment, automakers and end consumers.
