To maintain or even strengthen the competitive position of steel in the automotive industry new material concepts have been developed and the maximum strength level of cold formable steels has been widely extended. The new group of Advanced High Strength Steels offer very attractive combinations of strength and ductility, which are due to the coexistence of the different microstructure components, their different mechanical behaviour, and their mutual interaction. Advanced high strength steels have been developed for automative applications with excellent balance of strength and formability. The exakt description of microstructure is the clue for understanding their specific behaviour. This paper highlights the specific demands of automotive steels, the current trends in steel development, and the needs for new characterisation procedures.
