Experimental results pertaining to the development of energy efficient heat treatment processes for vacuum High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) Al-20%Si automotive components are presented. Precision, high frequency induction heating combined with computer controlled processing (including compressed gas/water quenching system) and Thermal Analysis were used for physical simulation of the complex heat treatment operations like multi-stage solution treatment, artificial aging and interrupted quenching, etc. The temperature vs. time cooling curves and their derivatives were used for control as well as optimization of the heat treatment process parameters. The experimental results showed that the duration of the conventional T6 heat treatment can be reduced by approximately 68% without compromising hardness and tensile properties. This was accomplished by carrying out a short 30 minutes solution treatment at 510 deg C (that is above the incipient melting temperature) and integration of the solution treatment, quenching and artificial aging operations. Physical simulations of the T5 heat treatment (consisted of casting water quenching after the de-molding operation followed by artificial aging at 200 deg C for 2 hours) revealed the possibility for further process time reduction by an additional 2%.
