In this study we discussed the effect of brake performance and brake behavior on the safety of a bicycle. When emergency braking takes place, the rear wheel of the bicycle that is not equipped with a suspension system will lift up via the brake force of the disk brake, which is very dangerous. At that moment, the rider can only execute passive control. The offsets of the disk brake will affect the yaw a little. The most important thing in the brake design of a bicycle is to ensure that the rider easily operates the brake. When the rider encounters an obstacle, she/he needs the brake to slow down the bicycle's velocity to be able to safely make a maneuver to avoid the obstacle. The purpose of the brake is not only to brake but also to simultaneously maintain transverse stability. Therefore, it is crucial for the rider to control the braking force in an easy and comfortable manner. From the discussion of brake behavior, it is evident that the variation of the front and the rear brake force distribution and the issue of the rider's ability to control the brake must be considered to enhance the safety of the rider and the brake performance of the bicycle, and the exact brake curve must be as close as possible to the road condition. For the design and assembly of bicycle brakes, choosing the correct disk size is the most economical way to enhance brake performance. When using this method, only the height of the brake device must be determined. It is necessary that the brake force of the front wheel is increased gradually during the braking process so that the danger of the rear wheel locking up can be avoided in order to enhance the braking performance and consequently the safety of the rider. Equipping the bicycle with brake devices of different brake force can also reduce the danger of the non-synchronous lock. According to the analysis, it may be sufficient to equip the rear wheel with a V-type brake device that has a smaller braking force than the disk brake on the front wheel. Otherwise, the adoption of the anti-lock brake system would obviously enhance the safety performance of the braking system on a bicycle. If brake force control is required, then a brake force distribution system must be provided.
