Fatigue design under variable amplitude loading is a widely used approach in the automotive industry. One of the most challenging problems is the lack of representative VHCF material data for the release of components. One possibility to provide these data is firstly to understand VHCF phenomena by analyzing material data from specimens testing, especially from ultrasonic testing machines. Secondly, the specimen data must be transferred to components. In this contribution, deformations and strains in the specimens during the ultrasonic testing have been analyzed under constant and variable amplitude fatigue loading. VHCF tests on notched specimens of aluminium alloy AW-6082 and AFP steel have been conducted and compared to testing results generated with conventional fatigue testing equipment. Validation and transfer of the results to components are one of the main challenges for fatigue design for the next years. Based on that specimens data, damage accumulation rules should be reviewed and enhanced. Validation and transfer of these damage approaches to components are one of the main challenges for fatigue design for the next years.
