Trailer coupling devices are safety components, which allow two functions - pulling trailers and transporting bike carriers. Regulation 94/20 EC, which has been developed in the 1960s, focuses on signing-off coupling devices for trailer service using a simplified test environment. This regulation is still valid and has to be fulfilled in the development process. Three load standards considering trailer service at passenger cars, trailer service at light trucks and SUVs as well as bike carrier service have been derived in order to test trailer coupling devices and their fixation points at the car body. Comprehensive investigations considering measurements, opinion polls and available load assumptions were performed in order to derive the load standards CARLOS TC, CARLOS TC LT and CARLOS TC BC. These load standards are currently in use by car manufacturers as well as suppliers for the development of safe and light-weight coupling devices. Furthermore they help to improve the development process by reducing design loops. In order to perform tests according to guideline 94/20 EC during the sign-off process by the supplier, the trailer coupling device has to be clamped rigidly at the test bench, mass and lever. Combining the load modules has to result in a loading with a probability of exceedance Pe 1 %. Following this strategy an initial test procedure is derived, which has to be scaled in testing time depending on load case (2 bikes or 3 bikes), number of tests performed for sign-off and scatter band of strength. Scaling values fsi, fs2, and fs3 were derived.
