In this study, a physics-based methodology was proposed and implemented to predict the mechanical and spin power losses of spur gear transmissions, manual as well as dual clutch transmissions. The transmission power loss model incorporates a spin power loss model and a mechanical power loss model in conjunction with bearing mechanical and viscous power loss models in order to predict the load-dependent and load-independent power losses of all the gear pairs in the transmission. The authors describe in detail the manual transmission power loss prediction methodology, the gear pair spin power loss model with drag power loss on the periphery of a gear, drag power loss on the faces of a gear, power loss due to gear mesh pocketing. The application of the power loss model to a manual transmission is discussed. Comparisons of the calculated predictions to measurements at a series production six-speed manual transmission demonstrate good correlation over ranges of operating speed and gear range. For the authors it is indicating that the model can be used for design and product improvement activities of vehicle transmissions.
