The indoor wear testing, as opposed to vehicle test on public road courses, offers many advantages in terms of timing, repeatability and reproducibility, but it requires a delicate phase of test condition preparation. This paper describes the process to generate the set of input to drive the indoor wear machine based on tire forces, camber and forward speed and, depending on the available data, analyzes the most suitable methodology. The forces can be predicted through an in-house developed algorithm, on the basis of vehicle, course and tire characteristics: these characterization techniques are described in details. The adopted methodologies have been successfully validated and proven to be fairly able to predict the forces generated by the tire on a given position on vehicle, when it is cruising along a specific wear course. Good correlation between indoor and outdoor test, on the basis of the projected tire life, was achieved and the results are shown in the paper. Due to its peculiarity the technique permits also the evaluation of the uneven and irregular wear occurring on the tires: some examples of correspondence of worn profiles of different typologies of tires are shown.
