Already for some years Continental AG focuses the technological efforts on the strategic fields of safety and comfort. As a result large improvements in tire technology, braking and driver assistance systems have been achieved, which all depend in their function on the ability to transmit braking forces. Consequently, the tire braking ability is of prime importance especially for modern vehicles with high safety standards. In this paper the authors present the central mechanisms that determine the deceleration ability of tires on wet roads. Based on a 3-phase model, the braking process for tires with full and minimum tread pattern depth is discussed. Hydrodynamic effects under hydroplaning conditions are covered, and mechanisms of slip depending hysteresis friction are presented.
