Short notice given only substantially as follows: In 2006 approximately 34000 pedestrians have been injured in vehicle pedestrian collisions in Germany. Presently, active precrash systems like external airbags have been developed as well as solutions for passive safety like bonnet layout. Still there are conflicts regarding increasing requirements of the bonnets such as stiffness, costs, crash behaviour and the thermal and acoustic absorbability. The objective of a collaboration project of ITB and ITA (AiF-No. 14109 BG) was to identify the basic potential of 3D spacer fabrics and multi layer fabrics for pedestrian safety systems. The results demonstrate that specially designed textile spacer fabrics have a high potential for shock absorption. This was verified experimentally in head impact tests on steel and plastic bonnets. A successful industrial implementation of passive damping systems on the basis of textiles requires extensive research, where the following aspects should be analysed: Moulding and packaging of textile spacer fabrics with a variation in the compressive rigidity and thickness; implementation of additional materials in spacer fabrics to reach energy, acoustic and thermal absorbability; relation between structure and dynamic compression properties, as well as acoustic and thermal absorbability of spacer fabrics with or without additional materials; further processing of spacer fabrics with or without additional materials to fit damping elements; modelling and construction of an integrated steel bonnet; implementation and testing of integrated bonnet systems with integrated multifunctional damping elements.
