In this contribution reflective bistable displays as low power consuming indicating devices are introduced with regard to the variety of underlying technologies and to potential applications in aircraft system technology. Special emphasis will be given to the current development of bistable reflective liquid crystal displays which are controlled remotely by radio frequency identification (RFID). These labels should be capable to work in a passive manner, i.e. their energy consumption should be provided by the electromagnetic field given by RFID. In summary, a review has been given on what are presently the most important types of reflective bistable displays with respect to their electro-optic properties such as switching voltages and contrast ratios and to the environmental conditions under which the displays may be operated. In the case of bistable cholesteric LCDs, recent technical developments have been summarized, which comprise the reduction of switching voltages and the combination of these displays with RFID. Finally, possible applications of bistable displays in aircraft system technology as well as benefits which would result from these applications have been discussed.
