Despite the current economic crisis railway operators are intensively looking for ways to increase the capacity of their networks. The significant rise of transportation volumes by rail for both passenger and freight transportation has created some bottlenecks, which limit or even prevent further traffic increase. Both building new infrastructures and expanding existing ones need large amounts of investments and planning. As construction takes often more than a decade it is mandatory to look for technical aids that could increase capacities on the existing networks. One solution which is already under investigation is to extend the length of freight trains up to or even beyond 1 km. These train lengths are well known from countries like United States of America or Australia, but the operation of such super long trains in a dense European network at the speeds that are common in Europe creates challenges for both the acceleration and the deceleration phases. Major critical factors in these phases are the in-train forces which need to be handled carefully and are the main subject of this paper.
