During the last fifty years, the field of automotive electronics has undergone a fast evolution, mainly marked by an outstanding growth of the functional scope combined with an increased logical networking of electronic systems. As a consequence, the complexity of the vehicle network architecture increased considerably, a development which will subsist as can be observed from current trends. This complexity crystallizes particularly in the network architecture design phase, where a high number of system requirements and realisation alternatives have to be managed. Therefore, the proper evaluation and validation of architecture concepts, as well as the use of appropriate decision methods have become critical success factors in identifying good architecture alternatives. In this paper, a new approach to the comparative evaluation of network architecture design alternatives in the design phase is presented. In the scope of this approach, the initial set of requirements is classified in design constraints and measurable design objectives. Design constraints are used to check the feasibility of each design alternative. Design objectives, on the other hand, are quantified based on architecture key figures and are used for the comparative evaluation of design alternatives. In order to cope with competing design objectives in the final architectural decision, a multi-objective decision mechanism based on the AHP is also suggested. Combined with an automated method for architecture design generation, it was possible to develop an automated architecture design and optimisation approach, where the design constraints and objectives are used as optimisation constraints and objectives respectively. The verification of this automated design approach showed that the optimisation algorithm was provided with the guidance required to deliver architecture design alternatives which can compete with the state-of-the-art design approach.
