The objective of the presented paper is to introduce a development methodology for the vehicle layout conception that, in particular, considers complex movement sequences. Exemplarily the vehicle ingress movement task was investigated in some detail. The results presented above are demonstrating that the integration of the ingress movement sequences into the vehicle layout conception is in principle accomplishable. One can assume that other complex movement tasks can be integrated in the systematic and user-centred vehicle layout conception as well. Good vehicle ergonomics is only guaranteed if the decisive and functional man-product requirements are considered. A coherent vehicle layout concept can be derived from these fundamental requirements. Among others, the central anthropometric requirements affect crucially the vehicle ingress and egress. For the ergonomist, the systematic and user-centered generation of a vehicle layout concept serves as an argumentation aid in the discussion with other disciplines. Modified main requirements with an influence on the vehicle ergonomics can be taken quickly into account in the vehicle layout conception. According to the predefined main requirements, alternative vehicle layout concepts can be evaluated by comparing them to an optimal solution. Applications of the research results by vehicle manufacturers are conceivable and would be appropriate for the operation of passenger vehicles. The results are transferable to commercial vehicles and, with some reservations, also to special purpose machines. The application of the research results in industrial production processes could assure a proper vehicle ingress and egress for vehicles that are developed currently and in the future. As an interesting side effect, vehicle development cost savings could additionally emerge from the user-centered and systematic vehicle layout conception that particularly emphasizes complex movement sequences of users when operating the vehicle.
