The stringent automotive EMI specifications may result in bulky and expensive filter components. Therefore a cost model for the filter components of a multi-phase converter is presented to obtain the optimum filter design with a minimum of costs and size. The resulting low inductance values lead to high current ripples and decreased efficiency of the converter. Therefore coupled inductors have been implemented to reduce the ripple currents. The experimental results obtained from a full-size prototype converter show that the optimized filter design achieves similar efficiency as a conventional filter design with large sized inductors. The paper shows that the costs and the size can be significantly reduced due to the optimized design.
