As a result of today's discussions concerning climate change and a possible Peak Oil a new trend to more and more energy efficient vehicles is getting popular. Even with decreasing fuel prices there is a strong demand to reduced CO2 emissions. In particular laws in the USA, which obligate car manufacturers to invest in alternative drive systems, are pushing the development of electrical drive systems. Due to higher rotational speed, limited available space and higher complexity of the cooling system the requirements for NGO (non grain-oriented) electrical steel have increased compared to those for standard electric motors. For this special application in electrical vehicle drives ThyssenKrupp Steel (TKS) has developed the new electrical steel grade 330-30AP. It is characterized by a low core loss of typically 75 W/kg at a frequency of 1000 Hz and a polarization of 1.0 T. Ways of reducing the core loss and characteristic properties of the grade 330-30AP are shown in this paper. Typical technical parameters are summarized. This grade has the advantages of a high polarization and thus a high torque of the electric drive. The new grade is ideal for use in hybrid vehicles and, when used in all-electric drives, its characteristics are in all points better than those of the standard NGO grades. In particular, for high frequency applications a sheet thickness thinner than 0.30 mm could be advantageous. However, in this case it is necessary to recognize that there are, besides the advantage of a lower core loss, also some disadvantages. Compared to a thicker sheet thickness do thinner sheets have a worse heat dissipation. Stamping and packeting are also more complex which raise the production costs.
