This article proposes a four-step method for simulating the car-entering movement. This method requires correcting the measured movement, determining the motion strategies and extracting a representative subject for each identified strategy, modelling a segment of the movement (e.g., the trajectories of the feet and the trunks centre-of-mass) of the representative subject and finally simulating the car entering movement for a new subject. To obtain the data needed to test the method, an experimental device and procedure was set up; 21 subjects without motor deficiencies took part in the experiments, which studied the movement of the lower limbs and trunk during car-entering movement. The simulation results presented indicate a good correlation between the simulated joint angles (hip flexion/extension, abduction/adduction and medial/lateral rotation, knee flexion/extension and ankle flexion/extension) and the corrected joint angles for the representative subject for each motor strategy. For simulations involving the median subject and the most divergent subject, the reference joint angles still indicate a good correlation with the corrected joint angles, although the gap between the simulated and corrected joint angles does increase as the difference with the representative subject increases. In general, we would like to improve all of the steps in our method. For example, we would like to allow more mobility of the spinal column, as has been done by Lempereur et al. (2004), which will obwiously change the solution to inverse kinematic problem; we would like to improve the 'building the corrected motion database' stage, as has been done by Ait El Menceur et al. (2008), who presents a multi-objective optimisation based procedure to correct the joint articulation angles in automobile ingress movement. Another possible directionfor future research would be to consider sub-representative subjects (i.e., sub-motion strategies of the identified motion strategies).
