In order to replace maintenance and repair system of electric motors based on their running capacity with an alternative maintenance system based on their actual technical condition, objective and reliable estimates of their technical condition are required. The determination of a set of parameters that characterize a mathematical insulation model and its equivalent circuit according to the processes that take place in insulation, particularly according to the self-discharge voltage, is considered. Most information on the condition of insulation is obtained by analyzing its absorption processes associated with charge accumulation at the interface of two dielectrics with different values of volume resistivity and relative dielectric permeability. These processes are evaluated based on the time dependences of insulation resistivity, self-discharge voltage, and reversal voltage. A device for measuring these insulation parameters is described. On the basis of measurement results a three-layered equivalent circuit is shown to be most suitable for analyzing processes that take place in the frame insulation of traction electric motors.
