With market introduction of hybrid powertrains the main focus of development has changed. The question if hybrid technology should be used in future has been replaced by the question which hybrid concept should be realised. Furthermore there is another aspect getting more and more importance: 'The optimal control strategy for propulsion systems in hybrid electric vehicles'. Besides an optimisation of the basic operating strategy the usage of environmental information and advance driver assistance systems (ADAS) is in focus of current research activities aiming on a further reduction of fuel consumption. The presented project 'Energy Management II' covers the integration of predictive driving information and environmental information in hybrid vehicles of the second generation. Project partner within this by the federal ministry of economics and technology funded activity are Daimler, Volkswagen AG and ika. All partners have also participated in the previous project ('Energy Management I') and have developed algorithms for an energy optimised operating of hybrid vehicles based on the previously gained results. Different control algorithms have been realised and calibrated for a luxury class vehicle (Daimler), a mid-size vehicle (Volkswagen AG) and a subcompact class vehicle (ika). The overall project duration was 45 months.
