The traditional silica technology, applied in tyres and technical rubber goods, came into the market in the early 1990's. Especially in the last couple of years, the increasing demand for cars with higher fuel efficiency leads to demands on tyres with lower rolling resistance. This, in combination with new legal restrictions on emissions of volatile organic compounds during the compounding process and during tyre lifetime have led to the development of new silanes apart from the traditional bis(triethoxy-silylpropyl) di- and tetrasulfanes. Additionally, new processing agents have been developed for silica tyre application, improving processability of the compounds while having no or only minor impact on the physical properties of the resulting tread. In this study, results with new silanes in combination with new processing agents will be discussed. Additionally, alternatives for traditionally used co-accelerators will be presented.
