In this study, we investigated the influence of several engine parameters that affect the HCCI combustion stability by applying the multivariate analysis, and also verified real-time operation control in a multi-cylinder gasoline engine. These investigations led to following findings: (1) The engine control parameters of the in-cylinder temperature and pressure influence the engine power in the HCCI operation. On the other hand, the injection and air/fuel mixture characteristics don't influence the engine power so much, but influence the HCCI operation stability. (2) It is effective for the HCCI combustion stability control to apply the fuel injection control with being kept the air-fuel mixture homogenity. (3) The HCCI combustion in a multi-cylinder engine can be kept stable by fuel injection control based on the results of the in-cylinder combustion conditions which are estimated by the output signals of in-cylinder sensor and engine out A/F sensor.
