Large offshore wind energy plants (OWEP) represent a big technical challenge with respect to design, operation and maintenance. Downtimes of the plant for extended repair, especially under harsh sea condition, resulting from undiscovered damage can lead to big economical losses. Complete failure of wind energy plants in the past have shown that standard inspections alone are not sufficient. For this reason it is important that automated monitoring systems for wind energy plants can detect damage in an early state before it becomes irreparable. This paper presents a three step concept for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of offshore wind energy plants: 1) damage detection under changing operational and environmental conditions (EOC), 2) sensor equipment validation, and 3) model-based damage localization. Some properties of the methods are demonstrated by simulation examples or with measured data obtained from a laboratory structure. The results show that damage or sensor faults could be successfully identified. These algorithms are also tested with data from the 5 MW prototype OWEP: Multibrid M5000-2.
