The German SAR satellite TerraSAR-X provides images with a resolution down to 1 m. It operates in different imaging modes in which the data is acquired with multiple apertures in along-track. This enables the detection of ground moving objects, like moving vehicles. Rising interest in area-wide traffic monitoring motivates spaceborne ground moving target indication which can be an attractive alternative to conventional traffic data acquisition. Specific detection schemes are required to account for the limiting conditions and the special effects moving objects suffer from in the SAR imaging processing. The presented method integrates a-priori knowledge from external sources, e.g. road databases, and exploits additionally multi-temporal data to enhance the detection process. The applicability of this detector and the possibility to extract traffic information from TerraSAR-X data is demonstrated.
