Since the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) became available in the end of the seventies, a variety of (assistance) systems for increased comfort, safety and fuel economy have been introduced in our vehicles. Several research projects around the world have shown that the function of these systems could be further improved with information about the road ahead. This foresight information, however, is not yet available from e.g. digital maps or intelligent infrastructure at a reasonable cost and accuracy. This thesis introduces an alternative method for the provision of the re-quired preview data. It is shown how a database containing the required foresight information of a frequently driven route can be automatically generated and continuously updated in the vehicle during the drive. For this, the relevant road characteristics (curves, slopes, speed limits, etc.) are identified during the drive and stored in a vehicle internal database. The stored information can be used for predictive driving strategies in subsequent trips along the route. By comparing newly identified events with events from earlier drives already existing in the database, the database is continuously extended and updated during each drive. In this way, the quality of the event descriptions can be continually improved. Possible ap-plications for the collected data are e.g. optimized gear shifting strategies, optimized energy management in hybrid-electric vehicles, and curve light. Particularly users of vehicles frequently traveling the same route can benefit from this self-learning route memory, i.e. commuter, in public transport, and for commercial vehicles.
