RCE, the 'Reconfigurable Computing Environment', is a service oriented software infrastructure to manage collaborative engineering processes. It hides the complexity of heterogeneous and distributed IT systems behind common user interfaces. RCE enforces security in the access of data and services. RCE is application independent and can easily be adapted to different application domains. The global architecture of RCE is based on the paradigm, that all components are realised as plug-ins. All functionalities come as components, each being deployed as separate plug-in to the OSGi framework. This architecture makes program development easier because each plug-in is written, compiled and tested separately from the others, typically by another developer. RCE consists of several components, each being realised as OSGi plug-in. A RCE installation always has these plug-ins. Additional, the user can add individual components, the example shows wrappers, graphical user interfaces and own applications. Due to its open architecture, RCE can be applied to arbitrary application domains. Two German ship yards (Flensburger Schiffbau Gesellschaft and Lindenau GmbH Schiffswerft und Maschinenfabrik use RCE to integrate their consultants and suppliers into the ship design process. Upon RCE the 'Ship Design and Simulation System' SESIS emerged. It integrates the individual data bases of the ship yards, which foster the construction of new ships. The service oriented architecture of RCE allows a transparent sharing of data and simulation facilities between the ship yards and their suppliers and consultants. Overall, SESIS significantly improves the design process of new ships, which have to be constructed in short time frame involving deep know-how of a large number of partners. It is planned to publish RCE as open source product under a dual license. The source will be published under the eclipse open source license, inviting others to collaborate in the future RCE development. For companies, a commercial license is offered including training, maintenance and support.
