The necessity to reduce fuel consumption on aircraft has induced an increase of electrical power on board aircraft. The characteristics of electrical power are also changing: voltage amplitude is doubling and frequency is becoming variable like the engine speed. These changes allow the possibility to introduce starter-generators on large aircraft. New technology breaks in machine and power electronics during the last past years are at the origin of starter-generator introduction on all aircraft types. THALES AES, long experienced in 28 V DC brush starter-generators for small aircraft, realised and tested prototypes for different applications on board of all types of aircraft, Test results on engines and airframer benches showed the adopted technology is ready to be used on future more electrical aircraft.
