A new cable was developed with super mechanical characteristics so that it can be deployed directly onto the ballast surface alongside the railway track. The traditional method for deploying cables next to the railway track is to first install a concrete trough along the route, conventional cables are laid into the trough and the trough provides suitable protection for the cables within the harsh railway environment. Major construction expenditure (due to labor & materials) is in the installation of the protective concrete trough. It is intended that the successful development of so called Super armored cable will present significant cost savings to the railway company since there will be no need to deploy the expensive concrete trough to protect the cable. The national railway company in the United Kingdom, Network Rail and SAMSUNG, has together co-evaluate Super Armored Cable both in trial and full service conditions and it is concluded that Super Armored Cable can represent in excess of 50 % saving over the cost of the traditional method for installing and protecting optical fiber cable. This cable value creation concept showed, breaking supply chain of rail optical network, means replacing weak optical cable to super mechanical performance cable.
