Significant advances in low cost, platinum-free metal hydride fuel cell (MHFC) technology have been demonstrated in stacks producing 1.5 kW at 150 W/kg and 150 W/L. Metal hydride fuel cell stacks provide the power of stationary PEMFC stacks at a fraction of the cost. Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (Ovonic) and Energy Technologies, Inc. (ETI) have worked closely as a team to successfully demonstrate an operating prototype 1 kW fuel cell power generator. Based on market demand, ETI and Ovonic have started commercialization efforts to develop a military power system for applications throughout the 5 - 20 kW power range.
