The German Space Agency (DLR) and Tesat recognized the potential of optical fibre TM/TC (telecommand and telemetry) interfaces and initiated various studies and development activities to foster the use of optical fibre based TM/TC. This paper reports on the results of trade-offs concerning new optical TM/TC bus topologies and protocols, the evaluation of the related optical components as well as on the development of an Optical Payload Interface Unit, which allows to command and survey a number of payload equipment via optical fibre.
