The control problem of an experimental 3DOF helicopter is studied. The helicopter was built to asses existing novel linear and nonlinear control strategies on such highly nonlinear and unstable systems. A mathematical model was developed for the vehicle and a linear controller was designed to stabilize the vehicle at given set points. After extensive computer simulations of the closed loop system the controller was implemented on the real system to asses its performance. The paper illustrate, the modeling phase, the design phase, the simulation phase and the implementation phase with results and discussions.
